Morocco Emerges as a Sustainable Powerhouse in Global Fruit and Vegetable Exports

Morocco is rapidly establishing itself as a significant player in the global fruit and vegetable market. Despite facing challenges such as arid climates and water scarcity, the country’s commitment to sustainability and innovation has propelled it to become the third fastest-growing exporter of fruits and vegetables worldwide.

Strategic Approach to Sustainability:

Moroccan agribusinesses prioritise long-term strategies over short-term gains. This is evident in their genuine commitment to sustainability, with many companies appointing dedicated sustainability directors to oversee environmental and social responsibilities.

Overcoming Climatic Challenges:

In regions where rainfall is scarce for extended periods, Moroccan producers have adopted advanced irrigation systems, soil management practices, and climate-smart agriculture techniques. These innovations enable the production of a diverse range of fresh fruits and vegetables for global markets.

Key Export Sectors:

  • Tomatoes: Morocco is a leading exporter of fresh tomatoes, particularly cherry and grape varieties. The country’s favourable climate contributes to high lycopene levels in tomatoes, and modern production systems ensure quality and sustainability. In the current season, tomato exports reached 690,000 tons, marking a 19% increase from the previous year.EastFruit

  • Citrus Fruits: Regions like Souss-Massa, Marrakech-Safi, and Beni Mellal-Khenifra are central to Morocco’s citrus production. The Nadorcott clementine, a patented variety, is among the notable exports. Citrus exports are projected to reach 597,000 tons in the 2024–2025 season, a 31% increase from the previous year.

  • Other Produce: Morocco also exports avocados, cucumbers, peppers, and berries, which are gaining popularity in premium retail chains worldwide.

Strategic Advantages:

Morocco’s proximity to Europe allows for fast and cost-effective transportation. Combined with its commitment to sustainable practices and quality production, the country is well-positioned to meet the growing global demand for fresh produce.

Through strategic planning, sustainable practices, and innovation, Morocco has transformed its agricultural sector into a robust and competitive force in the global market. As the country continues to overcome climatic challenges, its role in supplying high-quality fruits and vegetables to the world is set to expand further.
